Wilmot is making another plea to protect its groundwater. It comes as the Region of Waterloo considers a plan to pull more from the township to address the capacity issue within the Mannheim Service Area. “It’s not necessarily a Wilmot versus the region thing,” Mayor Natasha Salonen said at a council meeting on Monday night. “One, water take permits are with the province. So, there’s that. But two, we also do belong to the region, so the region should have everybody’s best interests in mind, which includes the impacted residents around these wells and not just the areas that they want to grow.” Wilmot councillors unanimously agreed that they would reinforce that message to the region. On Wednesday, councillors with the Region of Waterloo were scheduled to discuss whether to suspend a decades-old agreement limiting how much water can be taken from the township. However, that conversation was deferred until April 8.
