Waterloo Regional Police are investigating after suspects allegedly used a front-end loader to try to steal an ATM from a financial institution in Kitchener early Sunday. Police said the incident happened around 3 a.m. at a Scotiabank in the area of Fischer-Hallman Road and Huron Road. Investigators said unknown suspects used the front-end loader to breach the building’s exterior wall in an attempt to remove the ATM. Police arrived while the suspects were trying to steal the machine. The suspects fled in a newer-model white pickup truck and collided with a responding police cruiser while leaving the area, police said. Through the investigation, officers determined the front-end loader had recently been stolen. Police also found a second stolen vehicle in the financial institution’s parking lot. Police believe the incident was targeted. The investigation by the Waterloo Regional Police Service’s Break, Enter, Auto Theft and Robbery Unit remains ongoing.
