Drivers in Waterloo Region will need to be patient as several major road work projects continue well into the winter. One of the largest is the reconstruction of King Street East in the Sportworld Drive and Deer Ridge area of Kitchener. Drivers have already been dealing with lane restrictions and intermittent closures for weeks as the region updates aging infrastructure, adds new pedestrian features, prepares for the future ION expansion and smooths out the road surface. Work on that particular project is expected to continue into December. The region is also working on Ira Needles Boulevard between Yellow Birch Drive and Erb Street West in Waterloo. That project is meant to create a smoother road surface and improve the long-term safety and reliability of the area. Crews are expected to complete that work in October. “During construction, the region is making every effort to minimize construction disruptions,” they wrote in a statement emailed to CTV News. Kitchener projects In Kitchener, construction along Westwood Drive is expected to last into 2027, while work on Johnston Street, Patrick Street and Wellington Street North will continue into 2028. “Our projects are generally on schedule this year, so we haven’t had any weather impacts,” said Chris Spere, the director of engineering for the City of Kitchener. “We’ve had a couple of projects start a little later than we would normally like, but generally, our program is moving along really well this year.” A full list of road reconstruction projects in Kitchener can be found on the city’s website. Cambridge work In Cambridge, one major project is the construction of a new bridge along Black Bridge Road. Crews will upgrade the existing heritage bridge, create a multi-use trail next to the road, add new storm sewers and improve railway crossing. The work is expected to begin on Sept. 2 and stretch until the end of the 2026 construction season before shutting down for the winter months. Some tree removals have already taken place.
