EDMONTON — A plane on an overnight training flight made an emergency landing east of Edmonton early Wednesday morning. The Alberta College of Aeronautics (ACA) confirmed the small aircraft, a Cessna 172 plane, experienced an in-flight malfunction shortly before 1:30 a.m. “The pilot responded to the situation following their training procedures and successfully completed an emergency landing,” the college said in a statement Wednesday. Const. Sandra Geiger said officers were dispatched to Highway 21, between Highway 16 and Baseline Road, where the plane did an emergency landing. There were two people on board. No injuries, traffic collisions or damage to the plane were reported, ACA says. RCMP were told there were no vehicles on the road at the time. Regardless, a traffic advisory was issued. “This being a significantly unusual circumstance, it’s important that we are ready as drivers on the road to be able to respond accordingly,” Geiger told CTV News Edmonton. As of 7:30 a.m., the plane had been moved and the road was made accessible to drivers. A Cessna 172 is a common single-engine, four-seater plane that is used for flight training, aerial patrols and personal use. “We are grateful that everyone involved is safe and commend the pilot for their calm and professional response to an unexpected situation,” ACA said.
