One of the oldest standing homes in Waterloo Region is up for sale in Cambridge

It may be one of the oldest homes for sale in Waterloo Region, but it’s barely showing its age! CTV’s Heather Senoran gets a tour.

A historic home is up for sale in Cambridge – to the tune of $1.65 million.

The 1.4-acre property, at 1490 Blair Road, is said to have one of the oldest standing residences in Waterloo Region.

The home was built by the Bechtel brothers in 1817.

“They were some of the original settlers here in Blair Village. I’m sure you’ve heard of Becthel Park, that’s named after them,” said realtor George Dmitrovic. “It was built 50 years before the confederation, which means that it was standing before Canada was even a country.”

It is not often he sees a listing like this one on the real estate market.

“There’s lots of century homes around,” Dmitrovic said. “But something that’s 200-plus years old, one of the original homes built? That’s pretty rare to come by.”

The realtor said the current owners of 1490 Blair Road expressed one hope.

“Somebody that wants a home with a story, [and] to continue that story. And that also appreciates privacy and having a backyard,” Dmitrovic explained.

The 3,700-square-foot residence has four bedrooms, two bathrooms and two separate detached garages.

Dmitrovic said driving up to the home is a unique experience.

“You come in down [a] winding trail, sort of feels like you’re entering a fairy tale, and this house is revealed with this old-world charm. It’s like you step back in history.”

The City of Cambridge said staff were not sure if it’s one of the oldest homes in Waterloo Region but confirmed it was the oldest in what is now considered Cambridge.

The city noted the home is also included in the Heritage Conservation District of Blair, which means it is protected from some developments.
