As the last day to register to run in the upcoming municipal election draws near, there are still several uncontested races in Waterloo Region. The last day to officially file a nomination for the Oct. 26, 2026 election is Aug. 21. As of Wednesday afternoon, there were seven uncontested races in Waterloo Region, down from more than a dozen uncontested races three weeks ago. According to the City of Waterloo’s website, only one person has filed their paperwork in Ward 7: Julie Wright. All other unopposed wards are found in the townships, particularly, in Wellesley where all wards are uncontested: The number is not surprising. During the 2022 election, there were seven uncontested races across the region, including four in North Dumfries. Voter turnout in the 2022 election was also low. According to data from Waterloo Region, Wilmot had the highest number of ballots cast, with 40.35 per cent participation. Meanwhile, North Dumfries had only 18.52 per cent voter turnout.
