A suspect broke into a Kitchener bakery Wednesday and left with electronics – and a slice of pie.

Kristie Bannon, the owner of Mom’s Bread and Pie Co., located at King Street East and Betzner Avenue, said the break-in happened just before 5 a.m.

“My employee came in around 8 a.m. and noticed that the door was smashed open, so that was kind of scary for her,” Bannon told CTV News.

The business closed Wednesday as a result of the incident.

The store’s security system captured a clear image of the suspect, though Bannon said his face was partially obscured by the sunglasses and mask he was wearing.

“You could hear it; it was a very loud smash,” Bannon said. “Then the guy came in, he looked around, kind of played around with the electronics in the front and then went into the freezer, grabbed pie and then left. It’s unbelievable.”

The suspect made off with a tablet, a point of sale printer, a basket of ice cream sandwiches and a single slice of key lime pie.

“[It was probably taken] because it’s ready to eat,” Bannon said, laughing. “So everything is just frozen and needs to be baked. So it probably might give him away if he’s making some frozen pies at wherever he’s staying.”

Bannon said she felt more confused than angry after watching the security footage.

“I mostly felt sorry for the person,” she said. “It really felt like they just either wanted to smash something or they just wanted to cause a problem for somebody for no reason.”

Bannon said the estimated damage is under $5,000 – but the community response is priceless.

“Everybody has been absolutely amazing,” she said. “People are bringing us chocolate for stress eating and coffee and plants. At the end of day, we’re going to continue on as usual.”

Bannon said a report had been filed with Waterloo Regional Police, insurance was contacted, and the business would be up and running as usual on Friday at 10 a.m. They also promised to be at the St. Jacobs Farmers Market on Saturday.

The suspect is described as a white male with a “light” build. He was last seen wearing a black sweater, black pants, red gloves and sunglasses.

The police investigation is ongoing.
