A matter of degrees: Waterloo Region sees record cold for Feb. 12

Wednesday morning marked the coldest Feb. 12 on record in Waterloo Region – and it wasn’t even close.

Environment Canada says temperatures of -30.6 C were recorded in the region early in the morning.

Temperatures stayed at -30 for most of the period from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m.

That’s significantly colder than the previous record, set in 1919, of -25.6 C.

Daily records were also set in London (-26.7 C, compared to -25.6 C in 1958), Sarnia (-24 C versus -20.8 C in 2008), Ridgetown (--23.5 C today, -20 C in 1896) and Welland (-27.7 on Wednesday, -25.6 C in 1917).

While temperatures aren’t expected to break the freezing mark anytime soon, they will be warming up significantly.

Forecasts call for a high of -3 C Thursday in Waterloo-Wellington, Huron-Perth, Grey-Bruce and Oxford Brant.
