The Stanley Cup is coming to Leduc. It’s soon Jordan Martinook’s turn to spend time with the trophy he won last month as a member of the Carolina Hurricanes for winning the championship in the National Hockey League. The forward hails from the Alberta city of 40,000 just south of Edmonton next to the international airport. The 33-year-old Hurricanes alternate captain will bring hockey’s holy grail to the Leduc Recreation Centre on Aug. 11 from 10-11:30 a.m. The City of Leduc said in a media release on Friday that people can begin to queue at the centre at 9 a.m. Access to the fieldhouse will be located via the centre’s east entrance. Martinook, who was born in Brandon, Man., grew up in Leduc and played minor hockey there, including for both the U15 and U18 AAA Leduc Oil Kings. He later starred for the Drayton Valley Thunder of the Alberta Junior Hockey League and the Vancouver Giants of the Western Hockey League before he was drafted by the NHL’s Phoenix Coyotes in 2012. In 11 NHL seasons, Martinook has scored 102 goals and 262 points in 797 games played. A member of the Hurricanes since 2018, he has also scored 10 goals and 38 points in 95 career playoff games, all with Carolina.
