The Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) is on the lookout for new recruits and is turning to a local college to help out. The RCN is understaffed and says more than 3,000 additional personnel are needed to meet its defence mandate. The Navy and Georgian College have signed a memorandum of collaboration (MOC) to help fill that gap by way of cross-promotion and recruitment. Under the agreement, the RCN will provide recruiters and students at Georgian College with “enhanced access to information” on career opportunities with the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Navy, offer collaborative learning with serving members and share insight on reservist opportunities. “By connecting students with meaningful opportunities to learn about and serve in the Royal Canadian Navy, while also supporting the education and professional development of our reservists and sailors,” said Naval Captain Geoff Hamilton, Commander Naval Reserve Central Region. “We are creating pathways that benefit both the Navy and Canada’s broader marine sector,” Hamilton added. In exchange, Georgian College has agreed to “support prior learning assessments and advanced standing” for CAF and RCN members. The college will also collaborate on experiential learning, create opportunities for on-the-job learning for various naval occupation and designate a liaison officer to support military-connected students. “This collaboration builds on the strength of our postsecondary marine programs, which help develop future talent for the sector, and on our expertise in modular, industry-connected training that supports reservists and active service members,” said Kevin Weaver, President and CEO, Georgian College. In March, Georgian College signed a similar MOC with Base Borden, focused on improving post-education education access for serving members, veterans and their families as they transition into civilian careers.
