Central Alberta resort town to explore city status

Councillors in the Town of Sylvan Lake unanimously passed a motion for administration to begin work on the idea of becoming a city.

Councillors in the central Alberta town of 16,275 asked administration last week to prepare a report on what city status would mean for the lakeside community 20 kilometres west of Red Deer.

There is no timeline yet for when the exploratory report will be presented to the town council.

Sylvan Lake is one of 105 towns in Alberta, while there are 19 municipalities that have city status. Representatives elected to council at large in town elections, while cities have the option to establish a ward system.
