‘Violent sexual offender’ to live in Edmonton area: police

A convicted sexual offender is to be released and stay in the Edmonton area, police say.

Edmonton Police Service (EPS) issued a warning for Jamie Edward Meads, 38, on Tuesday as the agency believes he presents a “significant risk of harm to members of the community, particularly to those who may be vulnerable to intimate partner violence.”

Meads was convicted of assault causing bodily harm, assault by choking, suffocating or strangling, aggravated assault, forcible confinement, intimidation and uttering threats in June 2025.

Police say the offences stemmed from a “prolonged pattern of violence against an intimate partner” over several weeks.

Meads has an “extensive” history of intimate partner violence, police added, with eight known victims spanning around 20 years.

EPS obtained court-imposed conditions to manage his release, which include:

• supervision by a member of the EPS behavioural assessment unit;
• not entering any sexual or intimate relationship with a person unless written approval is given from a supervisor or designate, and until the person’s identity has been disclosed and they have been informed of Meads’s history;
• no direct or indirect contact with victims; and
• living at a residence approved by the Alberta Court of Justice or supervision.

EPS reminded the public that the intent of the warning is to take suitable precautionary measures but not to encourage “any form of vigilante action.”
