Tornado advisory dropped for east central Alberta, severe thunderstorm watch remains

Environment Canada ended a tornado watch for over a dozen communities in east central Alberta.

Conditions were favourable for severe thunderstorms which could have produced tornadoes late this afternoon and into the evening.

The advisory was for the city of Lloydminster and communities in the area, including Wainwright, Vermillion, Hardisty and Provost.

“Tornado watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce tornadoes,” said the advisory. “This is a dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation.”

Environment did drop the tornado watch in the late afternoon, but severe thunderstorm warnings remained in place for the area, as well as large parts of central and northern Alberta.

Strong winds with large hailstones and heavy rain is still possible into the evening as of 5:20 p.m. Environment Canada reminds drivers that conditions could become poor and to not drive on flooded roadways.

In the event of a tornado or if a tornado warning is issued, it is recommended to go indoors to a room on the lowest floor away from outside walls and windows, such as a basement, bathroom, stairwell or interior closet.

It is advised to leave mobile homes, vehicles, tents, trailers and other temporary or free-standing shelters, and move to a strong building if possible.

As a last resort, lie in a low spot and protect your head from flying debris.
