Sturgeon River water advisory lifted: AHS

Alberta Health Services (AHS) has lifted a water quality advisory for Sturgeon River near Edmonton.

According to a news statement from AHS on Friday, the Edmonton zone river is now safe for recreational use. Recent cooler weather has lowered the temperatures in the water, which means waste bacteria now “present a low health risk,” officials said.

An advisory was originally issued in April for the Rivercrest area near Benoit Bridge, and for the section of the river northeast of the Ray Gibbon Drive bridge near St. Albert, after sewage leaked into the river from a wastewater pipeline.

AHS said recent water tests have shown the impact of the leak has “dissipated.”

Health officials say people should never drink or cook with untreated water from any river, lake or reservoir.
