Charges are pending against a man accused of an assault in which racial slurs were used in St. Albert last week. RCMP say they got multiple calls about an ongoing assault at Poirier Avenue and Parkwood Drive around 2:30 p.m. on May 1. Witness descriptions of the suspect and a vehicle led to the arrest of a 40-year-old St. Albert man. The victim, who was identified in an Edmonton Muslim Community social media post as a Muslim man, was injured and treated in hospital. The suspect was released with conditions and is set to appear in court on June 8. The Alberta Justice Crown Prosecutor is currently going over a pre-charge assessment package before a decision is made on specific charges to be laid, according to Mounties, as racial slurs allegedly said during the assault are being “fully considered in the investigation.” “Racism of any kind has no place in our community. Incidents like this are deeply troubling, yet we know that St. Albert is a safe and welcoming city, filled with empathetic, compassionate people,” said St. Albert RCMP Insp. Aaron White. Anyone with further information or video footage is asked to contact St. Albert RCMP 780-458-3200 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers.
