Snow today, melting resumes Wednesday

Snowy conditions for both the morning and late-day commutes in the Edmonton area today.

But, between the drives... just mostly cloudy.

A couples waves of snow moving through the Edmonton region this morning should push off to the east and northeast by mid-morning.

We’ll stay mostly cloudy through the late morning and early afternoon with temperatures climbing a couple degrees above 0 C and wind expected to gust in the 40 km/h range.

The heaviest snow midday and this afternoon will hit areas from Westlock/Athabasca east to Bonnyville/Lloydminster. About 5-10 cm is likely in those regions.

There are also some heavier pockets of snow in the foothills this morning and that snow will continue through the day.

Snow moves back into Edmonton around 5 or 6 p.m. and sticks around through the evening hours, giving us another 1-3 cm (on top of the morning snowfall).

A warming trend starts Wednesday. Temperatures will get a handful of degrees above 0 C under a mix of sun and cloud in Edmonton and area. Scattered flurries are likely in northern Alberta.

In the Edmonton area, a few scattered showers are possibly late-afternoon or early evening.

Sunnier for Thursday/Friday in the city with a high near 8 C Friday and up around 12 or 13 C on Friday.

That warmer air sticks around for Saturday with a high near 10 C.

After Saturday, there’s a high degree of uncertainty with the forecast.

We’ll PROBABLY cool off and get some more flurries/snow on Sunday. I’m keeping daytime highs in the 2 to 6 C range for Sunday-Tuesday in the city.

However, some model guidance suggests less of a cool down and a chance of showers instead of snow Sunday. So, we’ll wait and watch to see how it develops.

Bottom line: Snowy and cool today... then a warming trend that ends with double-digit highs Friday/Saturday.
