Skinner-era ex-Oilers: Where are they now?

Stuart Skinner, the former starting goalie for the Edmonton Oilers who was traded to Pittsburgh in early December, played in his first game for the team on Jan. 31, 2021, against the Ottawa Senators.

In the five years since, 61 other players have joined Skinner as Oilers exes.

Just five players remain on today’s roster who played a game that COVID-19 pandemic-shortened season in empty arenas: Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Darnell Nurse and Evan Bouchard.

It’s not an unusual trend. National Hockey League teams turn over their roster at much the same rate as Edmonton. The Toronto Maple Leafs, the Oilers’ bitter rivals that season in the North Division, have seven players left over from then, for example, while the Colorado Avalanche, currently the league’s top team, also have seven.

Let’s take a look back at who has moved on from Edmonton since Skinner’s debut and where they are now.

Josh Archibald

The 33-year-old winger who played for the Oilers for three seasons is no longer in hockey.

Archibald stepped away from the NHL before the start of training camp in September 2023 with the Tampa Bay Lightning, with whom he had signed a two-year contract in the summer.

The Regina native played for Edmonton from 2019-20 through 2021-22, scoring 19 goals and 16 assists for 35 points in 122 games for them.

Archibald was sidelined for most of the 2021-22 season with myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, related to a bout with COVID-19.

He returned as a free agent to the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team that drafted him in the sixth round of the 2011 NHL Draft, in 2022-23.

Viktor Arvidsson

The 12-year NHL veteran winger plays for the Boston Bruins after the Oilers traded him to them this past summer.

Arvidsson, 32, had signed a two-year contract worth $4 million a season as an unrestricted free agent in July 2024, coming from the Los Angeles Kings. He scored 15 goals and 12 assists in 67 games played for the Oilers.

The Swede was originally drafted by the Nashville Predators, with whom he played his first seven seasons, in the fourth round of the 2014 draft.

Tyson Barrie

The 34-year-old who toiled for the Oilers from the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season through 2022-23 is currently a free agent.

The defenceman signed with the Oilers in October 2020 as a free agent coming from the Toronto Maple Leafs and often served as the point man on the team’s effective power play over his three seasons in blue and orange.

He was sent by the Oilers to the Nashville Predators ahead of the February 2023 NHL trade deadline in a deal that brought Mattias Ekholm to Edmonton.

Barrie, who started his NHL career with the Colorado Avalanche in 2011 after they drafted him in the third round two years prior, played another season for the Predators before becoming a free agent and getting an invitation to the Calgary Flames’ training camp in September 2024. He made the team and played 13 games for them while also suiting up for their AHL farm team, the Calgary Wranglers.

In 190 Oilers games, Barrie scored 25 goals and 107 assists for 132 points in 190 games played.

Ethan Bear

The 28-year-old defenceman signed a one-year, two-way contract with the New York Islanders this past summer after spending a season in the AHL playing for the Washington Capitals’ affiliate.

Bear, who was drafted by the Oilers in the fifth round of the 2015 Draft, has yet to play this season due to injury. He made his NHL debut late in the 2017-18 season with Edmonton and earned a full-time spot with them a year later.

He played two more seasons with the Oilers before he was traded to the Carolina Hurricanes on July 28, 2021, for forward Warren Foegele.

Bear, who hails from the Ochapowace First Nation in southern Saskatchewan, scored eight goals and 25 assists for 33 points in 132 games played for the Oilers.

Tyler Benson

The 27-year-old forward is the leading scorer for the Kassel Huskies, a team in Germany’s second-tier pro hockey league.

The Edmonton native was drafted by the Oilers in the second round of the 2016 NHL Draft. He spent the bulk of his time in the Oilers’ organization in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors and played 38 games for Edmonton in three different seasons.

He signed with the Henderson Silver Knights, the Vegas Golden Knights’ AHL farm team, for the 2023-24 season as a free agent. A year later, he played pro hockey in Sweden.

Matthew Berlin

The 27-year-old goalie was the emergency backup for the Oilers when the team faced the Chicago Blackhawks on Jan. 28, 2023.

He dressed as the back-up to Jack Campbell after the team pulled Stuart Skinner from the lineup close to game time due to illness.

Berlin, at the time a goalie for the University of Alberta Golden Bears men’s hockey team, took to the net with 2:26 left in the third period and the Oilers winning 7-3. The Edmonton native stopped the one Blackhawks shot he faced.

Berlin finished his collegiate hockey career a year later.

Nick Bjugstad

The 33-year-old forward now plays for the St. Louis Blues.

The 14-year NHL veteran played for the Oilers after they acquired him and defenceman Cam Dineen at the 2023 trade deadline from the Arizona Coyotes for defenceman Michael Kesselring and a third-round pick in that year’s draft.

He scored four goals and two assists for the Oilers in 19 regular-season games and added three goals in 12 playoff games that spring. He re-signed with the Coyotes that summer.

Derick Brassard

The 38-year-old forward recently came out of retirement to join Swiss pro team Genève-Servette HC.

The Hull, Que., native had retired last year from the NHL after 16 seasons. He last played for the Ottawa Senators in 2022-23.

The season before, the Oilers acquired Brassard from the Philadelphia Flyers at the trade deadline for a fourth-round pick in 2023. He scored two goals and an assist for Edmonton in 15 regular-season games, and played in one playoff game. He was a free agent at the end of the season, joined the Senators on a professional tryout and made the team out of training camp.

Brassard, who played for 10 different teams over his NHL career, was drafted in 2006 with the sixth overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

Philip Broberg

The 24-year-old defenceman plays for the St. Louis Blues, the team that gave the then-restricted free agent an offer sheet in July 2024 that the Oilers didn’t match.

Broberg had solidified his spot on the Edmonton blue line during that year’s playoffs, when the Oilers took the Florida Panthers to seven games in the Stanley Cup Final only to lose.

Edmonton drafted the 6-foot-4, 210 lb. rearguard eighth overall in 2019. He scored eight goals and 21 assists for 29 points in 68 games last season for the Blues.

Connor Brown

The 31-year-old winger joined the New Jersey Devils this summer as a free agent after spending the last two seasons with the Oilers.

The former junior teammate of Connor McDavid’s endured a challenging first season in Edmonton, where he went without scoring a goal for the Oilers until his 55th game that campaign.

Brown, who came to the Oilers as a free agent in 2023 from the Washington Capitals after rehabilitating a torn knee ligament for a year, returned to form in 2024-25, scoring 13 regular-season goals and adding five more in the Team’s playoff run to the Stanley Cup Final.

The Toronto native was drafted by his hometown Maple Leafs in the sixth round of the 2012 NHL Draft. He has aso played for the Ottawa Senators.

Drake Caggiula

The 31-year-old winger who had two stints with the Oilers that were five years apart is playing for Lausanne in Switzerland’s top pro league.

His last contract in North America was a two-year, two-way deal with the Oilers, for whom he played seven games last season, that saw him play most of the time in AHL Bakersfield.

His first go-around in Edmonton started in 2016, when he signed with the Oilers as the top free-agent prospect that year coming out of the U.S. college ranks. The Pickering, Ont., native’s most-productive offensive year as an NHL player came his second season, when he scored 13 goals and seven assists in 67 games.

He played his first two-and-a-half NHL seasons with the Oilers before he was traded to the Chicago Blackhawks with defenceman Jason Garrison for defencemen Brandon Manning and Robin Norell in December 2018. Caggiula also played for the Arizona Coyotes, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins before he returned to the Oilers organization in 2023.

Jack Campbell

The 33-year-old goalie is a free agent after spending last season in the Detroit Red Wings organization, playing 14 games for the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins.

He had started the 2024-25 campaign in the NHL/NHLPA Player Assistance Program. The American wound up with Detroit in July 2024, days after the Oilers bought out the last three years of a five-year contract worth $5 million a season he signed two years earlier.

He lost the starting role to Stuart Skinner early into his second season in Edmonton after posting a 1-4 record with a 4.50 goals-against average and an .873 save percentage. He spent the rest of the campaign in AHL Bakersfield.

Before joining Edmonton, Campbell played for the Los Angeles Kings, Toronto Maple Leafs – with whom he was an all-star in 2021-22 – and Dallas Stars, the team that drafted him 11th overall in 2010.

Sam Carrick

The 33-year-old centre is in his second season playing for the New York Rangers.

He joined the Oilers at the NHL trade deadline in March 2024 from the Anaheim Ducks in a deal that also saw centre Adam Henrique move to Edmonton, with draft picks sent to Anaheim in return. Carrick played 16 regular-season games and 10 more in the playoffs that year in a bottom-six, penalty-killing forward role.

The Markham, Ont., native signed with the Rangers that summer as an unrestricted free agent. He was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the fifth round of the 2010 draft.

Cody Ceci

The 31-year-old defenceman plays for the Los Angeles Kings. He joined them as a free agent after splitting last season between the San Jose Sharks and Dallas Stars.

The blueliner played for the Oilers for three seasons after signing a four-year, $13-million contract with them in July 2021. He showed offensive flair at times, scoring 11 goals and 57 assists for 68 points in 237 regular-season games along with three goals and 10 assists for 13 points in 52 playoff matches. Edmonton traded Ceci to the Sharks in August 2024 for Ty Emberson.

An Ottawa native, Ceci was his hometown Senators’ first-round draft pick, 15th overall, in 2012 and has also suited up for the Tornto Maple Leafs and Pittsburgh Penguins over his NHL career.

Alex Chiasson

The 35-year-old from Montreal is retired from pro hockey after 11 seasons in the NHL, his last coming in 2022-23 with the Detroit Red Wings. The right-winger played for seven teams over his career, including three with the Oilers.

Chiasson’s first season in Edmonton was his most offensively productive. He scored 22 goals and 16 assists for 38 points in 73 games played for the Oilers in 2018-19. That earned him a two-year, $4.3-million contract from Edmonton after playing for them on a league-minimum one-year deal.

In his 183 games wearing blue and orange, Chiasson scored 44 goals and 36 assists for 80 points. He joined the Vancouver Canucks as a free agent in 2021 after a professional tryout in training camp.

The early second-round pick in the 2009 NHL Draft by the Dallas Stars has also played for the Ottawa Senators, Calgary Flames and Washington Capitals.

Travis Dermott

The 28-year-old defenceman is currently a free agent and played for the Oilers last season.

The veteran joined the Oilers out of training camp, to which he had been invited on a professional tryout, on Oct. 8, 2024. He played 10 games for the Oilers before they waived him on Dec. 13, when the Minnesota Wild claimed him. Edmonton reclaimed Dermott off waivers from Minnesota two months later then assigned him to AHL Bakersfield.

The Newmarket, Ont., native has played 348 NHL games for five teams over eight seasons, scoring 16 goals and 46 assists for 62 points.

Jason Demers

The 37-year-old defenceman last played in the NHL with the Oilers, logging 10:44 of ice time in his lone game for Edmonton late in the 2022-23 season against the San Jose Sharks.

He had signed a two-way contract with the Oilers in December 2022 after a professional tryout with them for training camp and played 57 games for AHL Bakersfield.

The Dorval, Que., native scored 45 goals and 169 assists for 214 points in 700 career NHL games for five different teams, including the Oilers, Arizona Coyotes, Florida Panthers, Dallas Stars and Sharks, who drafted him late in the 2008 draft.

Vincent Desharnais

The 29-year-old defenceman plays for the San Jose Sharks, with whom he wound up at the NHL trade deadline last season from the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Penguins had acquired him a little more than a month before from the Vancouver Canucks, who had signed him as a free-agent to a two-year, $4-million contract in July 2024 after playing a full season on the Oilers blueline.

The 6-foot-7 blueliner had spent five seasons in the Oilers organization after being drafted by them late in the 2016 draft in his third year of eligibility.

Tyler Ennis

The 36-year-old retired winger played parts of two seasons for his hometown Oilers, in 2019-20 and the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign, after being acquired from the Ottawa Senators at the 2020 trade deadline for a draft pick.

Ennis played the first eight of his 13 NHL seasons with the Buffalo Sabres, the team that drafted him with their first-round pick, 26th overall, in 2008. He also played for the Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs.

After he left the Oilers to return to the Senators for the 2021-22 season, Ennis played two seasons in Europe, the last one cut short by a neck injury. He scored 144 goals and 202 assists for 346 points in 700 NHL games.

Adam Erne

The 30-year-old American forward plays for the Dallas Stars, two years after he toiled for a season in the Oilers organization after earning a one-year contract out of training camp from a professional tryout.

Erne split his time with the Oilers between Edmonton and AHL Bakersfield. He played 24 regular-season games for the Oilers in 2023-24, scoring a goal and an assist in a depth role. He played last season for the Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Rangers’ affiliate.

Erne has also played for the Detroit Red Wings and Tampa Bay Lightning, who drafted him early in the second round of the 2013 NHL Draft.

Warren Foegele

The 29-year-old winger is in his second season playing for the Los Angeles Kings, with whom he signed a three-year contract as a free agent in July 2024 after spending three seasons with the Oilers.

The Markham, Ont., native had been acquired by the Oilers in the summer of 2021 from the Carolina Hurricanes, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2014 NHL draft, for defenceman Ethan Bear.

Foegele played 231 games for the Oilers, the sometimes top-six forward most offensively productive season coming in his last one in Edmonton, when he scored 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points in 82 regular-season games while adding three goals and five assists in 22 playoff matches.

Sam Gagner

The recently retired 36-year-old was drafted sixth overall by the Oilers in 2007 and was a big part of the team’s remodel in the wake of their Stanley Cup run and subsequent trading of star defenceman Chris Pronger the year before.

He had three separate stints with Edmonton over his 19-year pro career, his most recent coming two years ago in his last NHL season, when he scored five goals and five assists in 28 regular-season games.

Gagner retired from hockey this past spring after playing 19 games for the AHL of the Ottawa Senators, for whom he now serves as director of player personnel. He played 570 of his 1,043 career NHL games with Oilers, scoring 116 goals and 211 assists for 327 points wearing blue and orange. He finished his career with 197 goals and 332 assists for 529 points.

Gaetan Haas

The 33-year-old Swiss centre plays in his home country’s top circuit for EHC Biel-Bienne, with whom he’s played the majority of his pro career.

The Oilers lured him away from Switzerland for two seasons, 2019-20 and 2020-21, scoring seven goals and six assists in 92 games while averaging a little more than 10 minutes of ice time per game. He was loaned to Swiss club SC Bern at the start of his second season, returning to Edmonton at the end of December, about a month before the NHL started the pandemic-shortened season.

Haas returned to EHC Biel-Bienne in 2021 following his stint with the Oilers.

Dylan Holloway

The 24-year-old plays for the St. Louis Blues, who successfully signed the winger to a contract after submitting an offer sheet to the then- restricted free agent in July last year.

The Oilers declined to match the offer for the Calgary native who they drafted in the first round, 14th overall, in the 2020 draft and received a third-round pick as compensation.

Over his first two NHL seasons, Holloway scored nine goals and nine assists for 18 points in 89 regular-season games, and added five goals and two assists over 25 games in the team’s 2024 playoff run to the 2024 Stanley Cup Final. Last season in St. Louis, Holloway enjoyed a breakout campaign, scoring 26 goals and 37 assists in 77 games played.

Caleb Jones

The 28-year-old American blueliner – son of former NBA player Popeye Jones and brother of fellow NHLer Seth – plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with whom he signed a two-year contract at the start of the season.

Jones’s NHL career started in Edmonton, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2015 draft. The depth defenceman spent five seasons in the Oilers’ organization, scoring five goals and 14 assists for 19 points in 93 NHL games.

The Oilers traded Jones and a conditional draft pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in July 2021 for defenceman Duncan Keith and forward Tim Soderlund. Jones has also played for the Colorado Avalanche and Los Angeles Kings.

Dominik Kahun

The 30-year-old forward plays in Switzerland for Lausanne HC of the top-level National League.

The German last played in the NHL for the Oilers in 2020-21, scoring nine goals and six assists for 15 points in 48 games. He had played the previous two seasons in the NHL with three different clubs, having come to play in North America in 2018 after four pro seasons in Germany.

The Oilers signed Kahun to a one-year contract in November 2020 after the Buffalo Sabres declined making him a qualifying offer, making him a free agent. After the 2020-21 season with Edmonton, he returned to Europe, signing with Switzerland’s Bern SC.

Evander Kane

The 34-year-old plays for the Vancouver Canucks, who acquired the forward from the Oilers this past summer for a fourth-round draft pick.

The Vancouver native, who joined the NHL aged 18 with the Atlanta Thrashers after they drafted him fourth overall in 2009, had come to the Oilers in January 2022 after the San Jose Sharks waived him unconditionally for violating league COVID-19 protocols.

He had an immediate impact for Edmonton, scoring 22 goals and 17 assists for 39 points in 43 regular-season games, and adding 13 goals and four assists in 15 playoff games that year. That performance earned him a four-year contract worth $5.125 million per season.

In his three regular seasons with Edmonton (he didn’t play a regular-season game in 2024-25), Kane scored 62 goals and 49 assists for 111 points in 161 games, adding 26 goals and 16 assists for 42 points over four playoff runs.

Zack Kassian

The retired 34-year-old forward played seven of his 12 seasons with the Oilers, joining them via trade in December 2015 from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for goalie Ben Scrivens.

Kassian hadn’t suited up for Montreal after being involved in a car accident almost three months earlier and breaking his nose and left foot and, while not driving the vehicle, intoxicated. The incident resulted in Kassian’s suspension and participation in the NHL’s substance abuse program.

The Windsor, Ont., native and 2009 first-round draft pick by the Buffalo Sabres enjoyed two of his best offensive seasons in Edmonton, scoring 15 goals in both 2018-19 and 2019-20 while providing toughness.

The Oilers sent Kassian to the Arizona Coyotes in a July 2022 trade that also saw an exchange of draft picks – Arizona getting three, Edmonton one – in a salary dump for the final year of his four-year deal worth $3.2 million annually. His last pro action came two years ago, when he played eight games in Czechia for HC Sparta Praha.

Duncan Keith

The retired 42-year-old Hockey Hall of Fame defenceman finished his 17-year NHL career with one season in Edmonton, where he played 64 regular-season games on the blueline in 2021-22, mostly on the second defensive pairing, plus 16 more in the playoffs.

He played the rest of it with the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he won three Stanley Cups, two Norris trophies as the league’s top defenceman and the Conn Smythe Trophy as 2015 playoffs MVP.

Keith landed in Edmonton after reportedly asking to be traded to a team closer to his family in British Columbia. Chicago dealt him and forward Tim Sodelaund to Edmonton for defenceman Caleb Jones and a conditional draft pick.

Jujhar Khaira

The 31-year-old forward plays for the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. He’s spent the last three seasons in the minors (besides one game for the Minnesota Wild two years ago) after seven campaigns of regular NHL work, most of it with the Oilers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2012 draft.

The Surrey, B.C., native played a bottom-six, depth role in Edmonton. He left the organization in 2021, when he signed with the Chicago Blackhawks as a free agent.

John Klingberg

The 33-year-old defenceman plays for the San Jose Sharks. A year ago next month, the Swede joined the Oilers as a free agent after missing more than a calendar year recovering from a hip injury.

The former all-star standout for the Dallas Stars played 11 regular-season games for the Oilers and 19 more in the playoffs, chiefly on the second defensive pairing. He signed with the Sharks in the off-season.

Klingberg had played eight of his 12 NHL seasons with the Stars, the team that took him in the fifth round pick of the 2010 NHL Draft. He’s also suited up for the Anaheim Ducks, Minnesota Wild and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Slater Koekkoek

The 31-year-old defenceman retired from hockey before the start of the 2022-23 NHL season. The depth blueliner spent the final two of his eight seasons with the Oilers after signing with them a month before the start of the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.

Koekkoek played 37 regular-season games in his time with the Oilers plus four playoff games in the 2021 playoffs. The Winchester, Ont., native also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Tampa Bay Lightning, the team that drafted him in the first round, 10th overall, by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2012.

Mikko Koskinen

The 37-year-old goalie is retired, last playing pro hockey in Switzerland in the 2023-24 season.

The Finn spent four seasons with the Oilers starting in 2018-19 after signing a one-year, $2.5-million contract. Koskinen had spent the previous six years playing in Europe, mostly in Russia’s KHL, after being drafted by the New York Islanders in 2009, and spending parts of three seasons between them and minor pro squads before returning to Europe.

He supplanted Cam Talbot as the Oilers starter by January 2019 and earned a three-year contract extension worth $13.5 million. He wound up splitting time in Edmonton’s net, playing in a tandem with Mike Smith over the next three seasons.

In all, Koskinen played 168 regular-season games for the Oilers, going 85-60-13 and putting up a3.01 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. He went 1-4 in seven playoff appearances for Edmonton.

Klim Kostin

The 26-year-old winger plays for Avangard Omsk in Russia’s KHL. He played for the Oilers during the 2022-23 season after they acquired him before it started from the St. Louis Blues for defenceman Dmitri Samorukov.

The Russian, who was drafted by the Blues at the end of the first round of the 2017 NHL Draft, scored 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points in 57 regular-season games for the Oilers and added three goals and two assists for five points in 12 playoff appearances that spring.

He was traded along with fellow winger Kailer Yamamoto to the Detroit Red Wings following the season for future considerations. He last played in the NHL in 2024-25 with the San Jose Sharks.

Brett Kulak

The 31-year-old defenceman plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins. He was traded to them along with goalie Stuart Skinner in an early December trade this year for goalie Tristan Jarry and forward Sam Poulin.

The Stony Plain, Alta., native played parts of five seasons for the Oilers after being acquired at the 2022 NHL trade deadline from the Montreal Canadiens for defenceman William Lagesson and a pair of draft picks. Kulak signed a four-year contract with the Oilers worth $11 million that summer.

In his time with Edmonton, the second- or third-pairing blueliner scored 15 goals and 56 assists for 71 points in 295 games, and added three goals and 17 assists for 20 points in 75 playoff appearances. The 13-year pro has also played for the Calgary Flames, who drafted him in the fourth round of the 2012 NHL Draft.

Dmitry Kulikov

The 35-year-old defenceman plays for the Florida Panthers. He suited up for the Oilers in 2021, when they acquired the Russian at the NHL trade deadline from the New Jersey Devils as a playoff rental for a fourth-round draft pick.

Kulikov played 10 regular-season games that pandemic-shortened campaign and played three times in the team’s first-round playoff exit against the Winnipeg Jets. The shutdown defender signed with the Minnesota Wild as an unrestricted free agent that summer.

The first-round pick, 14th overall, of the Panthers in 2009 has also played for the Jets, Buffalo Sabres, Anaheim Ducks and Pittsburgh Penguins over his 17-year NHL career.

William Lagesson

The 29-year-old defenceman plays for the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins, the farm team for the Detroit Red Wings.

The Oilers drafted the Swede in the fourth round of the 2014 NHL Draft and made his NHL debut in 2019-20. He played 57 games with the Oilers over three seasons while also spending time in AHL Bakersfield before he was traded, along with two draft picks, to the Montreal Canadiens at the 2022 NHL trade deadline for defenceman Brett Kulak.

Lagesson has also played for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Adam Larsson

The 33-year-old defenceman plays for the Seattle Kraken, who signed the Swede as a free agent from the Oilers in the summer of 2021.

The Oilers acquired Larsson from the New Jersey Devils in June 2016 in an oft-criticized trade for Taylor Hall. The shutdown defender, a fourth overall pick by the Devils in 2011, played 329 games over five seasons with the Oilers in which he scored 16 goals and 52 assists for 68 points.

Larsson, who often led the team in hits, added two goals and six assists in 19 playoff games for them.

Raphael Lavoie

The 25-year-old forward plays for the Henderson Silver Knights, the AHL affiliate of the Vegas Golden Knights. Vegas picked him up off waivers from the Oilers twice at the start of last season, when Edmonton was trying to comply with the salary cap for its roster.

The Chambly, Que., native was the Oilers’ second-round pick, 38th overall, in the 2019 NHL Draft and signed a three-year, entry-level contract with them in March 2020 after finishing his major junior career. The Oilers assigned him to a club in Sweden’s second-tier pro league for 2020-21 before bringing him back for the tail end of the AHL campaign that season.

He spent the next three seasons in AHL Bakersfield, eventually getting into seven Oilers games in 2023-24. The Golden Knights re-signed Lavoie this past summer to a one-year, two-way contract.

Brad Malone

The 36-year-old is an assistant coach with the Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins of the AHL. He played the last seven of his 14 pro seasons in the Oilers’ organization, playing 41 NHL games for Edmonton in that time.

Before signing with the Oilers in 2017, Malone played for the Carolina Hurricanes and Colorado Avalanche, who took him in the fourth round of the 2007 NHL Draft.

The Mirimachi, N.B., native spent the last four seasons of his pro career as captain of the Bakersfield Condors, the Oilers’ AHL affiliate.

Cooper Marody

The 29-year-old forward plays for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms, the AHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers.

The Oilers traded a third-round pick in March 2018 to the Flyers to acquire Marody, who was drafted by Philadelphia in the sixth round of the 2015 NHL Draft, following his U.S. college career at the University of Michigan.

The Brighton, Mich., native spent four seasons in the Oilers’ organization, playing mostly in AHL Bakersfield. He played seven games for the Oilers in that time, recording an assist. He signed as a free agent with the Flyers in the summer of 2022.

Ryan McLeod

The 26-year-old centre plays for the Buffalo Sabres, to whom the Oilers traded him in the summer of 2024 for winger Matt Savoie.

The second-round pick of the Oilers’ in the 2018 draft got his first taste of NHL action in the pandemic-abbreviated 2020-21 season, playing 10 games for Edmonton before spending the next three chiefly on the big-league roster, mostly in a third-line centre role.

The Mississauga, Ont., native’s best season in Edmonton was his last, 2023-24, when he scored 12 goals and 18 assists for 30 points in 81 regular-season games, adding four goals in 24 playoff appearances.

McLeod signed a four-year contract extension worth $5 million per season with the Sabres this past summer as a restricted free agent.

Ryan Murray

The 32-year-old defenceman is currently a free agent and last played pro hockey with the Oilers during the 2022-23 season, when he played 13 games in blue and orange, after he signed with them as a free agent on a league-minimum one-year contract.

The second-overall pick by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the 2012 NHL Draft – picked immediately after the Oilers selected Nail Yakupov at No. 1 – played 10 seasons in the NHL. He also suited up for the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.

James Neal

The 38-year-old is retired from hockey. The Whitby, Ont., native last suited up in 2021-22 for the St. Louis Blues and their AHL affiliate in Springfield, Mass.

Neal played two seasons for the Oilers after they acquired him in a July 2019 trade with the Calgary Flames for fellow winger Milan Lucic. He set a new Oilers record by scoring six goals in the team’s first three games of the 2019-20 season, including four against the New York Islanders on Oct. 8.

He finished the campaign with 19 goals (12 of them on the power play) and 12 assists for 31 points and added two goals and an assist in four playoff appearances. He scored five goals and five assists in 29 games played the next season.

He signed with the Blues in July 2021 once his contract with the Oilers expired. Neal, who played 14 seasons in the NHL, also played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Nashville Predators, Vegas Golden Knights and Dallas Stars, who drafted him early in the second round of the 2005 NHL Draft.

Markus Niemeläinen

The 27-year-old defenceman plays for Eisbären Berlin of Germany’s top pro league, Deutsche Eishockey Liga.

The Finn last played in the NHL for the Edmonton Oilers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2016 draft. He played 43 games for the Oilers in two seasons, in 2021-22 and 2022-23, over his four in the organization, the rest with AHL Bakersfield.

Once his second of two-year contracts ended in 2024, he left for Berlin.

Joakim Nygård

The 32-year-old winger plays for Färjestad Bollklubb in Sweden’s top hockey league. He played two season in the NHL, both with the Oilers. They signed him in 2019 after attracting interest for his play in Europe.

After scoring three goals and six assists for nine points in 33 games for the Oilers, Nygård returned to Färjestad BK for the 2020-21 campaign until the NHL started up their pandemic-shortened season. He played nine games for Edmonton and returned to Sweden.

Brendan Perlini

The 29-year-old winger plays for HC Lugano in the top Swiss pro league.

The first-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2014 draft played five NHL seasons, the last coming in 2021-22 with the Oilers, for whom he scored four goals and one assist in 23 regular-season games. The England-born Canadian had joined the Oilers on a one-year contract before scoring six goals and an assist for seven points in six preseason games to earn a spot on the team’s opening night roster.

He stuck in the lineup until early December, when he was assigned to the AHL and returned at month’s end for another two-month stint before going back to Bakersfield.

He made the AHL Chicago Wolves off a professional tryout the next season. The 262-game NHL veteran has also played for the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings.

Corey Perry

The 40-year-old winger plays for the Los Angeles Kings. He signed with them this past summer after parts of two seasons with the Oilers.

He joined Edmonton in January 2024, signing a prorated one-year contract with them two months after the Chicago Blackhawks had terminated his contract over misconduct that violated it and team policies. In a depth role, Perry scored eight goals and five assists for 13 points in 38 regular-season games, adding a goal and two assists for three points in 19 playoff games. T

he Peterborough, Ont., native signed another one-year deal with Edmonton in July 2024. He put up 19 goals (fifth on the team) and 11 assists for 30 points in 81 regular-season games that season while sometimes playing on the team’s top line and added 10 goals (second on the team) and four assists for 14 points in 22 playoff games.

Over his NHL career, Perry has won the Stanley Cup once – with the Anaheim Ducks, the team that drafted the four-time all-star in the first round in 2003 – and was the league’s most-valuable player and Rocket Richard trophy winner as top goal scorer in 2011. He has also played for the Dallas Stars, Montreal Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Jesse Puljujärvi

The 27-year-old winger plays for Genève-Servette HC in Switzerland’s top hockey league. He last played in the NHL last season, getting into five games with the Florida Panthers.

The Oilers drafted Puljujarvi fourth overall in the 2016 NHL Draft. The Finn signed a three-year, entry-level contract with them that July and started his NHL career after making the team out of training camp, but was sent to the AHL in January 2017 after appearing in 28 games, scoring one goal and seven assists for eight points.

He started the next season in Bakersfield but returned to the Oilers a month later and spent the rest of the season in the NHL, scoring 12 goals and 20 points in 65 regular-season games. The 2018-19 campaign saw him play chiefly with the Oilers, scoring four goals and nine assists for 13 points in 46 games until his season was ended by a hip injury.

Puljujarvi spent 2019-20 playing in Finland and started 2020-21 there as well before returning to Edmonton on a two-year deal. He wound up scoring 15 goals and 10 assists in 55 games during the pandemic-shortened campaign. The next season was his most productive offensively for Edmonton, scoring 14 goals and 22 assists for 36 points in 65 games.

The Oilers re-signed him in the summer of 2022. He recorded five goals and nine assists for 14 points in 58 games before the Oilers traded him to the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of the 2023 deadline for winger Patrick Puistola.

Olivier Rodrigue

The 25-year-old goalie is an unrestricted free agent. The Oilers drafted the Chicoutimi, Que., native late in the second round of the 2018 NHL Draft after trading up with the Montreal Canadiens to select him. The Habs received a third-round pick and a fifth-round pick in that draft in return.

Rodrigue signed a three-year entry-level contract with Edmonton in 2019 and two one-year contracts after that, playing the bulk of his time with the Oilers’ organization with AHL Bakersfield and appearing in two games, starting one of them, in 2024-25.

Derek Ryan

The 38-year-old centre retired from hockey in September after playing the last four of a 10-year NHL career with the Oilers.

The Spokane, Wash., native broke into the NHL aged 29 with the Carolina Hurricanes, for whom he’d play two full seasons before signing a three-year contract with the Calgary Flames in 2018.

Ryan, a University of Alberta Golden Bears alum, joined the Oilers in 2021 on a two-year deal. The depth forward played 261 of his 606 career NHL games with Edmonton, scoring 29 goals and 31 assists for 60 points for them. He got into 45 Oilers playoff games, scoring two goals and five assists for seven points.

Kris Russell

The 38-year-old last played in the NHL in 2022 for the Oilers, with whom he toiled the last six of 15 seasons in the league.

The second- and third-pairing defender joined the Oilers in 2016 on a one-year, $3.1-million deal and played 339 of his 912 NHL games in blue and orange, scoring 10 goals and 67 assists for 77 points for them. The Caroline, Alta., native signed two more contracts with the Oilers: a four-year deal in 2017 worth $4 million a season and a one-year pact in 2021 for $1.25 million.

Russell was known for his shot-blocking prowess, setting the record for the most by an NHL player (1,999) in 2021. He also played for the Dallas Stars, Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets, who drafted him in the third round of the 2005 NHL Draft.

Patrick Russell

The 32-year-old forward plays for the Cologne Sharks in Germany’s top pro league. The undrafted Dane joined the Oilers out of the U.S. college ranks in 2016.

Russell played three seasons for AHL Bakersfield and parts of three for the Oilers, with the bulk of his 59 games for them coming in 2019-20.

He left the Oilers and North America after his last contract with them, signing in Sweden before heading to Germany this fall.

Dmitri Samorukov

The 26-year-old defenceman plays in Russia’s KHL for CKSA Moscow, where he’s toiled this season and last. The Oilers drafted the Russian in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft and signed a four-year entry-level deal with them that fall.

The OHL grad joined the pros in 2019-20 and spent the season in AHL Bakersfield that season, played with CKSA Moscow the next year due to the pandemic and returned to Bakersfield in 2021.

The Oilers traded Samorukov to the St. Louis Blues at the start of the 2022-23 campaign for forward Klim Kostin.

Colton Sceviour

The 36-year-old forward last played pro hockey in Switzerland, where he played two seasons for Bern SC through 2023-24. His last NHL stop was Edmonton, who signed the Red Deer native as a free agent in October 2021 after a professional tryout.

The depth forward played 35 games for the Oilers that campaign, scoring two goals and three assists for five points, and playing 22 AHL games in Bakersfield.

Sceviour also played in the NHL for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers and Dallas Stars, who picked him in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Draft.

Devin Shore

The 31-year-old centre plays for Sparta Praha, joining the Czechia pro team after 10 NHL seasons. The Ajax, Ont., native played three seasons for the Oilers, who signed him as a free agent in 2020.

The depth forward scored 14 goals and 20 assists for 34 points for the Oilers, and got into two 2021 playoff games with them. He left the Oilers as a free agent, signing with the Seattle Kraken in 2023.

Shore has also played for the Minnesota Wild, Columbus Blue Jackets, Anaheim Ducks and Dallas Stars, who drafted the 498-game NHL veteran with the first pick of the second round of the 2012 draft.

Jeff Skinner

The 33-year-old forward plays for the San Jose Sharks, with whom he signed as a free agent this past summer after spending a season with the Oilers.

The Toronto native played 72 games for Edmonton in 2024-25 after joining them as a free agent from the Buffalo Sabres, scoring 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points, and getting into five playoff games – including three in the Stanley Cup Final – in which he scored a goal and an assist.

Skinner was originally tagged to play a top-six role for the Oilers but was used chiefly as a depth forward and was at times a healthy scratch.

The seventh overall pick of the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2010 NHL Draft has played more than 1,000 games in the big leagues and has scored 30-plus goals in a season six times.

Stuart Skinner

The 27-year-old goalie plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins, who acquired him earlier this month along with defenceman Brett Kulak from the Oilers for goalie Tristan Jarry and minor-league forward Sam Poulin.

Skinner, an Edmonton native, served as the starting goaltender for the Oilers for much of the last three seasons, compiling a 109-62-18 record, a 2.74 goals-against average and a .904 save percentage over 191 regular-season starts. In playoff action, he started 50 games, going 26-22 with a 2.88 GAA and a .893 save percentage.

The Oilers drafted Skinner in the third round of the 2017 NHL Draft and spent parts of three seasons in AHL Bakersfield and most of one with ECHL Wichita before. He stuck with Edmonton full-time starting in 2022-23, when he started the season as backup to the newly signed Jack Campbell. When Campbell struggled to start the season, Skinner essentially assumed starting duties a month into it.

Mike Smith

The 43-year-old goalie last played in the NHL in 2022 for the Oilers, whom he backstopped to the Western Conference Final that year against the Colorado Avalanche.

Smith joined the Oilers as a free agent in the summer of 2019. The Kingston, Ont., native played the last three of his 16 NHL seasons in Edmonton, also suiting up for the Calgary Flames, Arizona Coyotes, Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars, who picked him in the fifth round of the 2001 NHL Draft.

Known for his intensity and adept puck-handling skills, the 670-game NHL veteran who spent most of his career with the Coyotes played 99 regular-season games for the Oilers, compiling a 56-27-10 record, a 2.70 goals-against average and a .913 save percentage for them along the way.

Troy Stecher

The 31-year-old plays for the Toronto Maple Leafs, who picked up the defenceman off waivers from the Oilers last month. The depth blueliner played parts of three seasons with Edmonton after they acquired him and a seventh-round draft pick at the 2024 NHL trade deadline from the Arizona Coyotes for a fourth-round pick.

The versatile defender often played third-pairing minutes but assumed second-pairing duties from time to time. He played 79 games for Edmonton, scoring three goals and six assists for nine points, and suited up for eight playoff appearances last season.

The undrafted Richmond, B.C., native joined the NHL in 2016 with the Vancouver Canucks and has also played for the Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings and Calgary Flames.

Kyle Turris

The 36-year-old retired from hockey in 2022. The New Westminster, B.C., native played the final two of his 14-year pro career with the Oilers, signing with them for the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 campaign. He played mostly a depth role for Edmonton over his 50 games in blue and orange, scoring three goals and six assists for nine points.

Turris played 776 NHL games, scoring 168 goals and 257 assists for 425 points, with four teams, including the Oilers, Nashville Predators, Ottawa Senators and the Phoenix Coyotes, who drafted him third overall in the 2007 draft.

Kailer Yamamoto

The 27-year-old winger plays for the Utah Mammoth. He joined the NHL in 2017 with the Oilers, who took him that year with the 22nd overall pick in that year’s draft.

The Spokane, Wash., native played six seasons in Edmonton, sometimes in a top-six forward role, scoring 50 goals and 68 assists for 118 points in 244 regular-season games. Yamamoto scored three goals and nine assists for 12 points in 34 playoff appearances.

The Oilers traded him and fellow winger Klim Kostin in June 2023 to the Detroit Red Wings for future considerations. He played 2023-24 with the Seattle Kraken before joining the Mammoth last year after a professional tryout.
