Shootings, gun seizures in January rise compared to last year: Edmonton police

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says there were 12 occurrences of shootings and 97 crime gun seizures in the first month of 2026, a slight rise from this time last year.

In January 2025, the number of shooting incidents was nine and 57 firearms were seized, a news release from Wednesday said.

Of the 12 shootings last month, eight were believed by police to have been targeted and four resulted in injuries. Nine also put innocent bystanders in potential harm’s way, EPS added.

Sgt. David Graham with the EPS firearms investigation unit said several arrests had been made so far this year in firearm-related investigations.

The majority of shootings in January 2026, 67 per cent, took place in the afternoon and evening between 12 p.m. and 12 a.m.
