Residential snow clearing to begin Monday in Edmonton

Starting then, drivers will have to avoid parking on neighbourhood streets being cleared as part of a Phase 2 residential parking ban.

A Phase 2 ban should last 14 days, although each neighbourhood should only be impacted for about three, said Val Dacyk, the city’s snow and ice program removal supervisor, in a Wednesday news conference.

Neighbourhood snow clearing will pause on weekends starting Friday at 7 p.m. and ending Monday at 7 a.m.

Residential roadways will be cleared to five centimetres of snowpack, with extra snow placed on windrows along roadways, boulevard areas and open green spaces where possible, a city media release added.

Dacyk said windrows blocking access to driveways and corner crosswalks would be dealt with within four hours of snow removal to give a 1.5-car-width amount of access into necessary areas.

Vehicles parked in residential areas while crews attempt to clear snow run the risk of being ticketed or having their residential area skipped over and rescheduled for a later date.

The city suggests alternate parking options like in driveways, alleys, garages or on any roads cleared during the Phase 1 parking ban if parking is allowed normally.

Certain EPark zones across the city also offer free parking overnight between 6 p.m. and 9 a.m.

Culs-de-sac clearing will be worked on during the residential parking ban, but Dacyk said the design and size of these areas require different equipment – meaning full cul-de-sac cleanups are scheduled for after the ban is over.

School zone clearing will begin every weekend starting Jan. 23 until complete.

Dacyk also asked Edmontonians to avoid calling 311 for requests to clear residential roadways, as crews are actively out already.

Residents can sign up for alerts online to find out when their neighbourhood will be cleared.
