Remembrance Day is observed on Tuesday, Nov. 11 to honour veterans. Here are events happening in Edmonton. City events The Loyal Edmonton Regiment will host a ceremony at City Hall from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Tuesday to honour military veterans, serving members and those who lost their lives serving. Seating starts at 9:15 a.m. and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Guests are asked to be inside City Hall no later than 9:50 a.m. The ceremony will also be streamed live through the city’s YouTube. There will be an outdoor procession to the City Hall Cenotaph following the service where wreaths will be laid as well as two minutes of silence. The High Level Bridge, Walterdale Bridge, City Hall, Muttart Conservatory, Edmonton Tower and Rossdale Powerplant will be lit in white, yellow, red and black on November 8 for Indigenous Veterans Day and the red on Tuesday for Remembrance Day. There are no ceremonies at Edmonton’s municipal cemeteries on Nov. 11. City of Edmonton recreation and attraction facilities will operate statutory hours on Remembrance Day. Facility staff and patrons are invited to observe a moment of silence at 11 a.m. where it is safe to do so. The Loyal Edmonton Regiment Military Museum will be hosting an open house all of next week. It will be open on Remembrance Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will observe a traditional moment of silence at 11 a.m. Museum galleries will be open for visitors and there will be a dress as a soldier station for children as well as military vehicles on site. Use of the Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) will be free for veterans and active members who are in military uniform or legion dress on Tuesday with a Canadian Forces or RCMP identification card, or with a Veterans’ card or National Defence Record card identifying the individual as past or current military personnel. ETS buses and LRT trains will operate on Saturday schedules with DATS operating on a holiday schedule. Routes 8, 9, 103 and 701 will be detoured due to a number of events happening throughout the city. Specific information can be found here. There will also be several temporary road closures. Royal Alberta Museum The Royal Alberta Museum will be screening Cree Code Talker, a 15 minute film recognizing the role of Canadian Cree code talker ‘Checker’ Tomkins during the Second World War. While Canadian law criminalized Indigenous language at the time, Cree was used in the war as a form of code. The screening will take place at 12 p.m. at the Roundhouse and is included with regular admission. There will also be objects displayed from Indigenous veterans who contributed to Canada’s efforts in the Second World War. Griesbach Remembrance Day Ceremony Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry will be hosting a Remembrance Day ceremony at Patricia Park in Griesbach on Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. The community league will lay a wreath on behalf of community members. West Edmonton Mall A Remembrance Day service will be held at the Ice Palace at West Edmonton Mall from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., hosted by the Jasper Place Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion. There will be a moment of silence at 11 a.m. Beverly, Calder Cenotaphs Remembrance Day events will be held at Cenotaphs in Beverly and Calder neighbourhoods which will include wreath-laying, a moment of silence, readings and music. The Calder Community League will have a short reception with refreshments after its event. People are encouraged to gather at the community hall around 10 a.m. A parade to the Cenotaph will leave at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday will mark the 105th year of honouring veterans at the Beverly Cenotaph. The program will begin with church service at Maranatha Christian Reformed Church at 9:30 a.m. From there, a procession will head to the Cenotaph at 10:20 a.m. Warm drinks will be served at the Cheremosh Ukrainian Dance Company following the ceremony. Alberta Legislature While the province held its remembrance proceedings on Thursday, the Alberta legislature will host the Remembrance Day Artillery Salute at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11. The 21-gun memorial salute marks the end of the two minutes of silence.
