It may only be July, but holiday preparations are underway. Youth Empowerment and Support Services (YESS), a 24/7 support centre for young people experiencing crisis, on Tuesday launched its annual Adopt-A-Teen program, through which thousands of teens will receive a $50 gift card to buy something for themselves during the holidays. “It gives dignity. (It’s) an opportunity for the individual to choose what they want to get for the holiday season,” explained YESS chief programs officer Mario Borba. Those seeking help from YESS might be experiencing homelessness, addiction, or trouble reintegrating into society. In addition to beds, YESS provides long-term support seeking education and employment. Last year, the agency helped 6,000 people aged 14 to 24 during the holiday season, according to Borba. “They feel seen. They feel belonging,” he told CTV News Edmonton of the impact of the Adopt-A-Teen program. The gift cards will be accepted at any Southgate Centre store, as the mall is a partner of the program.
