‘Opportunity to get out here with the whole family’: Local golf course welcoming dogs

The Cattail Crossing Golf Club invites golfers to hit the links with their dogs every Monday. CTV News Edmonton's Nahreman Issa has the story.

G-O-L-F is becoming as exciting a word as W-A-L-K in some households since a local course began inviting dogs to join their owners for a round.

Cattail Crossing Golf Club on the north side started hosting “doggy Mondays” about three years ago to great interest from customers.

“It’s a nice opportunity to get out here with the whole family, and then he gets to come with us,” said golfer Robin Bussiere of her Morkie Oliver.

“It definitely helps out with his energy levels and gets him socializing with other dogs and humans, too.”

Staff frequently hear that feedback, whether golfers walk or cart the course.

And since Mondays are generally slower days, the extra bodies on the course doesn’t affect the pace of play.

“Even people who don’t have dogs, they love seeing dogs out here,” said shop manager Shivani Bhardwaj.

Monday was two-year-old husky/golden retriever Kobe’s first time at the club.

“It’ll be a regular thing as long as he can behave,” said owner Tyler Douglas.

“The biggest challenge, I think, is going to be (keeping) him out of the water hazards.”

But he called the opportunity “really unique.”

The club’s patio and driving range are dog friendly, as well.

The club recommends interested golfers consider whether their dog can ride in an open golf cart before coming. It also recommends golfers bring a leash, dog treats, and bags, and asks owners to help keep the fairway in good shape.
