Low Level Bridge fully reopened to traffic after partial rehab work

Edmonton’s Low Level Bridge is open in both directions after city crews finished restoration work on it earlier this week.

The city in a media release on Friday said all lanes on both the northbound and southbound spans are open to traffic.

Crews started work on the southbound span of the bridge in late July, which included mechanical cleaning of steel truss corrosion, and strengthening and replacing bridge parts. They also installed roadway crossovers to the southbound span and scaffolding underneath each span to provide access for workers.

The sidewalk on the southbound span remains closed.

The city said it’s now planning rehabilitation work for the northbound span and expects to share timelines for it next year.

The Low Level Bridge is actually two bridges. The northbound span, the city’s oldest river crossing, was built in 1900 and was originally known as the Edmonton Bridge. It became known as the Low Level Bridge sometime after the city’s High Level Bridge opened in 1913. Edmonton added the southbound Low Level Bridge span, designed to match its neighbour, in 1949.

The northbound span, which holds a municipal historical designation, was last rehabilitated in 2006, the southbound span in 1994.
