A 14-year-old boy is showing his support for the soldiers at CFB Wainwright by walking the streets of Edmonton, raising money all the while. On a chilly Sunday morning, while most were fast asleep, Liam Herman was outside walking. There is no destination, but his goal is clear. “It’s been pretty cold – freezing my toes off,” said Herman. When the teen heard about the fire in Wainwright, it struck a chord with him. “I thought it was terrible, was feeling pretty sorry for the families and such that were affected by that,” said Herman. “I hope the best to them, and the people currently in the hospital.” Herman got out at 3 a.m. Sunday, walking 200 kilometres – nearly the distance from Edmonton to the Saskatchewan border to raise money for the families of the victims and the survivors. “I don’t necessarily have a route, I’m just walking until my deadline. I’m hoping to do at least 100 kilometres or 80 kilometres today, then I’ll do 32.5 kilometres until Wednesday,” said the teen. Driving alongside Herman, are his family who are proud to support his goal. “Words can’t even explain how proud I am of him,” said Herman’s mother Tammy. “The kid has got a heart of gold.’ The family is making sure to keep Herman fed and hydrated while keeping a watchful eye. “My mom – probably couldn’t have done it without her,” said Herman. Herman is working with Support Our Troops, a military-focused charity organization. As of Sunday afternoon, Herman had raised more than $700, his goal is $7,000.
