‘I am so sorry’: Teen convicted in fatal stabbing near Edmonton school sentenced to 18 months

A teen convicted of manslaughter in the death of Karanveer Sahota, 16, has been sentenced to 18 months. CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson reports.

A teen convicted of manslaughter in the attack near an Edmonton school in April 2022 that killed 16-year-old Karanveer Sahota has received an 18-month sentence.

The teen, who cannot be named because of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, has been referred to as SM.

He was one of seven charged in the fatal attack on Sahota.

The Crown and defence submitted a joint submission for sentencing that was accepted by Justice Gillian Marriott on Wednesday.

SM will serve nine months in custody and nine under house arrest to account for the three years he’s been on release conditions.

Ahead of the sentencing decision, court heard 16 victim impact statements from family and friends of Sahota, and from officials from the school nearby the scene of the attack.

His cousin described him as hardworking and ambitious and said she no longer feels safe in her day-to-day life in Edmonton after Sahota was killed in broad daylight.

The school principal called the incident traumatic for the school community, leaving students and staff shaken and fearful, noting it still evokes pain and trauma for students, staff and families.

SM also addressed the court, apologizing for his actions.

“I am so sorry. I know that sorry will never be enough,” he said.

“If I could take it back I would in a heartbeat.”

SM will also serve one year of probation at the conclusion of his sentence.
