Hot air balloon appears to touch southwest Edmonton home

A hot air balloon appeared to clip the roof of an Edmonton house on Monday. CTV News Edmonton's Amanda Anderson reports.

A homeowner believes a hot air balloon scraped the roof of her southwest Edmonton house on Monday morning.

Eliza says she heard a loud noise early in the morning.

“I was hearing multiple bang sounds and I just thought it was trucks going by on 199 Street. I didn’t look because it’s kind of usual to me,” she told CTV News Edmonton.

“Half an hour after, I got up and got dressed, and I was on social media, and I saw this picture on the Hamptons information page, and I said, ‘Oh my gosh, that’s my house. There’s a hot air balloon on top of the roof. That’s what that sound was.’”

The photo in the post appears to show a hot air balloon touching the roof of Eliza’s house.

“It was just unbelievable. How can that balloon go so low? Where are all the trees and the ponds?”

Nearby resident Darrell says he saw the balloon just after it passed by Eliza’s house.

“Coming around the lake I noticed a balloon was flying pretty low and I thought that was kind of strange, and then we came around the trees and we noticed that the basket was spinning 360 and I thought that was super weird,” he told CTV News Edmonton.

He says he talked to Eliza and her husband shortly afterwards.

“When I got home, they had come over and asked me if I’d seen a balloon had bumped their roof, but I hadn’t seen that,” he said.

“Part of it was out of sight, but I’m just putting two and two together. The basket spinning I’m pretty sure that isn’t a normal thing, so I kind of assume that they probably touched down on something.”

CTV News Edmonton contacted the company that owns the balloon, but a spokesperson said they didn’t have any issues with their balloon on Monday morning.

When asked to comment on the photo of the balloon, the spokesperson said appearances can be deceiving.

Eliza says her husband did a quick check on the roof and there’s no apparent damage, but they’re waiting on an expert opinion.

“We don’t know about the vents, if it’s damaged, because it was pretty loud.”
