Here’s what’s happening in Edmonton this weekend

Here are a few events to check out this weekend in and around the city.

The businesses of 124 Street are ushering in the holiday season early with their All Is Bright festival on Saturday evening. Attractions include lights, live music, food and other winter activities – not to mention a giant gingerbread house modeled after The Grand Budapest Hotel.

While the festival is only one night, window art and installations on storefronts along the street will remain up from Saturday to Nov. 22.

Strathcona County also kicks off its Celebration of Lights on Saturday at the Sherwood Park Festival Place. From 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., visitors can check out free activities like wagon rides with Santa and Mrs. Claus, holiday crafts, face painting and cookie making.

If you’re not looking to accept the winter weather just yet, a bull-riding circuit is in town to bring the western vibes to Edmonton. The Professional Bull Riders Canadian National Finals is being held at Rogers Place on Friday and Saturday nights. Tickets are available online.

The Northern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium will also be running performances of four-time Tony-award-winning MJ the Musical all weekend. Jordan Markus plays the King of Pop in this bright, energetic and detail-oriented production.

For those looking for a personal gift or Edmonton-themed souvenir ahead of the holidays, Alberta Avenue is hosting the Edmonton Potters’ Guild on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event features ceramic pottery from more than 80 local artists.

Saturday also marks the beginning of Métis Week. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the second level of Kingsway Mall, the Métis Art Collective will host its annual market for a chance to explore handcrafted goods and meet Alberta Métis artists.

On Sunday, the Alberta legislature will host its annual Louis Riel Commemoration Ceremony at 11 a.m. Riel is honoured each year on Nov. 16 for his role in fighting for the rights of Metis people. The public is welcome to attend, but it’s recommended to arrive early to go through security.
