Edmontonians are getting a first-come, first-served chance to have their skin checked for free at a mobile clinic dedicated to early detection of skin cancer and prevention. Melanoma Canada created a coast-to-coast Mole Mobile that works in partnership with the Canadian Dermatology Association to visit cities with long wait times, rural and Indigenous regions and underserved communities. The tour’s west coast portion stops in Edmonton on Thursday, then Spruce Grove, St. Albert and Fort Saskatchewan this week. It then loops back to Edmonton on June 21. Visits are free but limited by availability. A full schedule can be found online. “Skin cancer in Canada is still quite prevalent, is still rising,” dermatologist Mariusz Sapijaszko said at the Mole Mobile on Thursday. “We have about 30 melanomas diagnosed per day in Canada, and three people die from melanoma per day. So it’s not a minor thing.” Prospective clients can sign up for notifications when different venues pop up on the Mole Mobile tour. The pop-ins also include plans to follow-up with a doctor. Since 2023, the Mole Mobile has screened thousands of Canadians and identified hundreds of suspicious lesions or melanomas.
