Fort McMurray pedestrian taken to Edmonton in critical condition after getting hit by vehicle

Police say a man is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle in downtown Fort McMurray Monday evening.

According to a statement issued Tuesday, a 63-year-old man was struck by a vehicle while he was crossing the street. Police interviewed witnesses and reviewed surveillance, revealing the man was in the street in between intersections, crossing against a green light where traffic had the right-of-way when he was hit.

The man was taken to the local hospital and was later taken by air ambulance to Edmonton, where he remains in critical condition.

RCMP say alcohol and speed have been determined not to be factors in the collision and police do not anticipate laying any charges.

Mounties advise pedestrians to use designated crosswalks and obey traffic signals, even when no vehicles appear to be around; avoid distractions like using your phone or wearing headphones while crossing the street; make eye contact with drivers before stepping into a crosswalk to ensure they see you; stay alert for turning vehicles, even when you have the right-of-way.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and remain vigilant at intersections.
