Edmonton’s Food Bank will only be collecting monetary donations at Heritage Festival this weekend. The organization cited “site logistics and vehicle restrictions” for the change. The food bank will have tents at Hawrelak Park’s main gate, footbridge, and bus stop with information about how to donate. “We’re encouraging people to leave their non-perishable food items at their local grocery store when they’re buying their own groceries, or visit us online and make an online contribution,” said executive director Marjorie Bencz. Monetary donations can also be made by texting FEEDYEG to 20222. Non-perishable donations are also collected at fire halls and will be collected at the Edmonton Elks game on Saturday. “People tend to think of the food bank and our work at Christmas and other festive times of year, and our work is necessary and ongoing throughout the course of the year. So this time of year, our food supplies are very low, and so if we can do anything to help build them up and help us get into the fall, that would be appreciated,” Bencz said.
