Edmonton weather: The chill is here and snow is coming soon

Cloudy, chilly and foggy in the Edmonton area again this morning.

The fog didn’t dissipate much Wednesday, but it should ease later today as the air starts to move a bit.

Temperatures won’t move much, though. We’ll hold steady in the -7 C to -9 C range through the day with a few occasional flurries, especially this afternoon.

That turns to some periods of light snow this evening and overnight, so we’ll wake up to 1-3 cm of snow on the ground Friday. Not a huge dump, but a small taste of what’s coming next week.

Some sunny breaks develops later in the day Friday and temperatures will hover in the -10 C range for most of the day. With a 10-15 km/h wind...we’ll have wind chill in the -15 range.

Elsewhere in Alberta, some flurries and light snow across the northern third of the province today. Heavier snow hits southern Alberta late today and Friday with 10-20 cm possible in areas south of Calgary and 5-10 cm possible in the Calgary region.

Looking ahead:

Partly cloudy through the weekend with the cold air lingering through Saturday and Sunday, then starting to push out on Sunday.

We’ll start both Saturday and Sun with temperatures in the minus teens. Saturday gets back to a high near -10 C, while Sunday climbs to the -5 C range as the first of a series of low-pressure systems kicks the coldest air off to the east.

That string of low-pressure systems next week will bring a chance of snow each and every day next week.

At this point, the best chances for some heavier snow (5+ cm) are Monday and Thursday.

That said, there’s still a high level of uncertainty with the exact location and intensity of the snow (given that it’s a week away).

The strength and positioning of those systems will also play a big role in the temperatures for next week.

We’ll probably get back to around 0 C on Monday, then cool a bit Tuesday. Beyond that, we could be anywhere between -2 C and -10 C for daytime highs through the middle to the end of next week.

Bottom line: Cold air sticks around for today, Friday, Saturday... with some light snow tonight.

Milder temperatures late Sunday and through Monday with several blasts of snow (of varying intensities) next week.
