Edmonton weather: Snow and gusty wind returns tonight, with a deep freeze to follow

Partly cloudy skies, light wind and temperatures climbing to the -10 C range this afternoon.

It all starts to go sideways late this evening as another area of low pressure develops over southern Alberta and brings back the snow and gusty wind tonight and early Friday.

It looks like we’ll see roughly 4-7 cm of snow in the Edmonton area, starting late this evening and ending early Friday morning.

At the same time, we’ll have gusts around 50 km/h. So, reduced visibility in blowing snow will be an issue once again and the morning commute Friday will likely be impacted.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see some blowing snow advisories get issued for parts of central and north-central Alberta.

Further north, a snowfall warning is in effect for the Peace River region. Between 15-20cm of snow is expected through today and Friday.

In Edmonton and area, conditions will improve by Friday afternoon as the wind backs off and we get some sunny breaks.

BUT...temperatures tumble behind that system and we’ll slip to around -20 C by Friday afternoon.

For Saturday-Tuesday: mornings in the -30 C range and daytime highs in the -20s.

There’s some uncertainty with WHEN the deep freeze will break. But, I think we’re PROBABLY back to highs in the -10 to -15 C range by Christmas Day/Boxing Day and there’s some indications that we could return to the -5 C range around the 27th or 28th.
