Edmonton weather: Cold spell lingers and there’s some Christmas Eve snow coming

A few flurries in the Edmonton area and scattered through central and northeast Alberta. Most areas won’t see anything more than a dusting to 1cm of accumulation and skies should start clearing by midday in the Edmonton area. So...we’ll get a bit of sunshine this afternoon.

Clouds and gusty wind roll in overnight and into early Tuesday.

Then, some sunny breaks in the afternoon tomorrow.

There’s something “interesting” going on with temperatures around the region the past while. The Blatchford weather station has consistently been running several degrees warmer than surrounding stations.

Now...it’s not unusual for urban areas to be a bit warmer than outlying areas - but even personal backyard weather stations within the city have been consistently 3 to 5 degrees colder than Blatchford.

I don’t know exactly what’s causing that - but it IS making forecasting temperatures a bit more “difficult”.

Daytime highs at Blatchford hit -16 Sat/Sun.

Meanwhile, the backyard stations and all the other official ECCC stations at YEG airport, Villeneuve airport, Stony Plain etc posted highs around -21 this past weekend.

We’re seeing the same thing this morning.

All the weather stations in the area are around -21, but Blatchford is at -17 at 7am.

Bottom line - we shouldn’t see too much of a change to the temperature pattern through this week.

Daytime highs will be in the -15 to -20 range and mornings will be in the -21 to -26 range.

Wind chill will be a significant factor late tonight and Tuesday morning.

Friday looks rather gusty as well.

Outside of that - the wind shouldn’t be much stronger than 5-10 km/h.

We have Cold Warnings in effect across northern Alberta with wind chills in the -40 to -45 range and those warnings will likely be in place for several days.

Snow outlook:

A low pressure system will sweep some snow in from the south on Wednesday (Christmas Eve) and that could deliver a solid 5 to 10cm of snow to the Edmonton region.

It’ll also impact highway travel, especially on the QE2 all day Wednesday.

At this point, it looks like the snow will start early in the morning in the Calgary region and then push north towards Edmonton by mid morning.

It’ll be snow along the QE2 corridor pretty much all day Wednesday before easing up in the evening further south and later Wednesday night in the Edmonton area.

The snow-zone will stretch west to east right across the southern half of the province early in the day and then the heavy pockets of snow will move through east-central and NE Alberta later in the day.

The Peace Country looks like it’ll get missed (maybe a few flurries - but no heavy snow).

Boxing day Friday brings another blast of snow and wind to much of the province, but snowfall accumulations shouldn’t be as significant as Wednesday.

Tonight - Increasing cloud overnight & becoming gusty.

9pm: -20

Temperatures dropping near -25 around midnight and then climbing.

Tuesday - Mix of sun & cloud.

Gusts to 40 km/h in the morning, then easing midday.

Afternoon High: -18

Wednesday - Cloudy.

Snow starting by mid-morning and continuing through the afternoon.

5 to 10cm likely.

Friday - Mix of sun & cloud.

Gusty.

30% chance of late-day snow.
