Edmonton shooting numbers up in August: police

Edmonton police say shooting numbers are up in August after 10 were reported last month, a slight increase from nine shootings recorded in July.

Of the 10 shootings, six were believed to be targeted and four resulted in reported injuries. Police confirmed two people died from shootings in August.

There have been 91 shootings so far this year, a seven per cent increase from the 85 reported over the same period in 2024.

Officers seized 65 firearms last month and 495 in 2025 so far. Last year, 538 firearms had been seized by the end of August.

The data comes after the Labour Day long weekend saw a string of suspicious deaths in the city, including the shooting death of an instructor who taught at NorQuest College.
