Edmonton police officer charged with sexual assault

An Edmonton Police Service officer has been charged with sexual assault in connection with an incident in 2023.

An Edmonton Police Service (EPS) officer has been charged in connection with a sexual assault more than two years ago.

On Sept. 8, 2023, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to investigate an allegation of on-duty sexual assault by an EPS officer.

ASIRT’s investigation found there was reasonable grounds to believe that an offence had been committed, and the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service found there was evidence that met the standard for prosecution.

On Wednesday, Const. Renzo Geronimo was charged with sexual assault, unlawful confinement, unlawfully in a dwelling house, and breach of trust.

Geronimo was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 10.

In a statement to CTV News Edmonton, EPS said Geronimo is still on duty.

“Cost. Geronimo is currently in a non-frontline role and his duty status moving forward, in light of the recent criminal charges, is currently under review. He is a five-year member of the Edmonton Police Service,” Carolin Maran wrote.

“As per standard process, EPS Professional Standards Branch will commence an investigation under the Police Service Regulation following the resolution of the court proceedings.”
