Daycare worker charged with sexual assault fled the country: Edmonton police

Edmonton police say a former daycare worker who is facing sexual assault charges involving children has fled the country.

Edmonton police say a man charged with sexually assaulting a child while working at a south side daycare has fled the country.

Court documents show that 32-year-old Dilpreet Singh Chawla is charged with sexual assault, sexual interference and invitation to sexual touching for incidents that occurred at Willowbrae Academy Millcreek between January and May of this year.

He was also charged with sexual assault, interference and invitation to sexual touching for incidents occurring between October 2023 and June 2025, according to court documents.

An email from police said they are making inquiries about having Chawla brought back to Canada on nationwide arrest warrants.

“At this time, since Chawla is not in Canada, there is no immediate risk to the public,” said the email.

The mother of the four-year-old girl allegedly targeted by Chawla said police charged him last month, but that he had yet to be arrested.

Chawla was at Willowbrae for several years before he was put on administrative leave following the allegations.

A report from the Early Learning and Child Care Officer said the daycare self-reported an “allegation of abuse” on June 18.

The report said an inappropriate interaction allegedly occurred between a staff member and a child in the shed in the daycare’s outside play space.

Police said support is being provided through the Zebra Child and Youth Advocacy Centre.
