The Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market is looking to expand its clientele outside of weekends with the opening of its new corner store. “Let’s get people down here, it lets people shop outside of regular market hours,” said Neil Byatt, president of The Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market. The Side Door is located southeast of the building and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Old Strathcona Farmers’ Market has been a staple in the community for over 40 years and features more than 130 vendors. Byatt says the corner store is another way to get more people to the area. “Anything that we can do to provide those services and those groceries to people who can’t make it during our regular business hours is fantastic,” he said. The farmers market was previously open only on Saturdays and recently expanded to Sundays in May. Ward papastew Coun. Michael Janz says the farmers market is an anchor in the community and the extended hours benefit everyone. “It’s really exciting, especially for the people who live in this area. The city as a whole is growing in the core … those people need somewhere to shop", said Janz. “People are looking for unique products that the market has to offer.”
