Beware of spoof calls from officers accusing you of fraud: EPS

The Edmonton Police Service says fraudsters are "spoofing" the number for its front desk, telling people they're involved in an investigation.

Police are warning Edmontonians to be wary of any calls coming from the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) downtown branch phone number.

EPS said it has received multiple reports of fraudulent calls from the branch’s front counter line at 780-421-2200.

The fraudster is spoofing the phone number, impersonating an officer and telling victims they are involved in a fraud investigation, a news release from EPS on Wednesday said.

EPS said the caller is asking for personal information. It advises anyone who receives a call like this to hang up. The release said no police officer will ever call from a general inquiries line.

There is also a call coming from an Ontario Provincial Police non-emergency line to residents in the Edmonton area, EPS said in a later news release.

Fraudsters calling from 1-888-310-1122 are once again accusing victims of fraud and asking for personal information. Edmontonians are again advised to hang up.
