B.C. man charged in crash that killed Alberta child

Charges have been laid in a crash that killed a young girl last year.

A 73-year-old man from Chemainus, B.C. has been charged with operation of a motor vehicle dangerous to the public causing death and four counts of operating a motor vehicle dangerously to the public causing bodily harm.

On March 28, 2025, a white pickup and a grey pickup crashed at the intersection of Highway 13 and Highway 36 just east of Killam, Alta.

A nine-year-old girl in the white pickup was declared dead at the scene.

Another nine-year-old girl, a 12-year-old boy, a 14-year-old boy and their 44-year-old father were taken to hospital with various injuries.

The 73-year-old man driving the grey pickup and his 73-year-old female passenger remained on scene and were also assessed for minor injuries.

Police say the grey pickup, which was traveling south on Highway 36, failed to stop at a stop sign and crashed into the side of the white pickup, which was westbound on Highway 13.

The accused is set to appear in court on March 3, 2026 in Killam.

The Town of Killam is about 140 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
