Winnipeg police say they are “grasping at straws” as the search for a 57-year-old grandmother enters its second week.

Thelma Krull disappeared while out for a walk last Saturday morning in Winnipeg. At a press conference Friday, police admitted they had few leads to go on as the investigation continues.

"We are really grasping at straws right now. We don't know what the circumstances are surrounding Thelma's disappearance,” said Const. Eric Hoffley.

The homicide division has now taken the lead in the case, although it continues as a missing person investigation, according to Winnipeg Police.

On Friday, police released a picture from a video surveillance camera of two people they believe were in the same area as Krull when she went missing last weekend. Hofley said the individuals were not suspects, but investigators want to identify and speak with them.

While there are few signs of a ground search in the area, neighbours say police have been going door to door.

"We've had police come knocking on the door the other day. They searched our shed, I hear they're going to start searching houses, it's very concerning that something's happening,” said Roland Gibson, who lives in Winnipeg’s east end.

Krull’s disappearance has sparked fear within the community. For instance, Gibson says he’s changed his routine in the last few days, following her mysterious disappearance.

"I don't go out walking on my own now,” said Gibson, whose concerned wife and daughter have warned him to be cautious.

"They tell me: 'Don't go without your phone, tell us where you're going.' They're very concerned when I come out here on my own.”

Dora Viandante, who also lives in the city’s east end, has been taking weekly walks around the community for more than 20 years, including near the East Side Eagles football field, only metres from where police found Krull’s glasses during their search.

"No, I'm not scared. I come here and I lock the gate there. And I don't go to deserted areas,” said Viandante.

Volunteers have plastered the neighbourhood with posters of Krull’s photo, hoping people will come forward with information.

Police are urging those with video surveillance systems in the areas of Valley Gardens, East Kildonan and Harbourview to check their footage for signs of Krull last Saturday morning.

Krull is described as Caucasian, 5-foot-4, 170 pounds with short, dyed blonde hair with a purple streak. She was last seen wearing black capri-style pants, a reddish-orange shirt, hiking boots and glasses.
