Are you a snowbird avoiding your U.S. travel plans because of Trump? We want to hear from you

The cooler seasons are upon us, a time when many Canadian retirees, informally known as snowbirds, head South to winter in warmer temperatures. This community rent or buy homes in warm states like Florida and Arizona to escape the frigid winters.

But with the current political climate in the U.S. impacting everything from border crossings and registration and documentation rules, along with an increased presence of crackdowns on migrants, some Canadians might be rethinking wintering in the States.

In April, a U.S. federal judge allowed the Trump administration to move forward with a requirement that everyone in the U.S. illegally must register with the federal government and carry documentation.

The registration process also applies to Canadians who are in the U.S. for more than 30 days, including snowbirds.

According to an August survey for Royal LePage, 54 per cent of Canadians who own property in the U.S. are considering selling their homes within the next year.

In fact, 62 per cent of respondents say they are second-guessing their annual vacation plans because of U.S. President Donald Trump and his administration.

One-third of respondents say they want to sell for personal or financial reasons, while five per cent say they want to leave because of “increasingly extreme weather conditions, such as hurricanes, floods and forest fires.”
