City adds new temporary water stations to offer respite during summer heat

The city has 29 temporary drinking water stations set up throughout Edmonton to help keep people and pets hydrated.

The City of Edmonton has added new locations for its water station program ahead of the summer heat.

There are now a total of 29 temporary stations across the city with new locations at Kinsmen Park, Whyte Avenue, Mill Woods Recreation Centre and SouthBark on 82 Avenue.

“During our hot summer months, easy access to water can prevent an emergency,” said Mayor Andrew Knack in a statement Thursday. “Extreme heat disproportionately affects vulnerable groups in our communities, including children, the elderly, people with disabilities and those experiencing homelessness.”

Each temporary water station costs about $5,000 to fabricate, not counting water usage, installation and deinstallation.

The city’s water station program launched in 2021 and runs from spring to Sept. 30 annually.
