United Way’s annual ‘Pull the Bus’ fundraiser powers through the smoke

Despite the smoke, teams of eight turned up on Wednesday for the United Way’s annual Pull the Bus fundraiser.

Money raised during the event will support multiple charitable organizations throughout the region.

Teams of eight took turns pulling a 24,000-pound transit bus 75 feet.

Wednesday’s Pull the Bus event happened at noon in the Canadian Tire South parking lot at 2720 Fairway Rd. S.

It’s part of the United Way’s community fundraising campaign, which is hoping to bring in $300,000 this year.

“Whether it’s the Baby Bundle program and giving those out to expecting moms or single moms, or the Big Brothers Big Sisters program and their mentoring program,” said Jaci Zalesak, executive director for the United Way of Lethbridge and Southwestern Alberta.

“Or other food security programs, like out in Pincher Creek, for example, and giving out food hampers out there. … Things like that, that we’re able to support with these funds.”
