‘Unbelievable’: Calgary couple still hospitalized following crash; family rallying around them

Nine days after they were seriously injured in a head-on collision, a Calgary couple is still recovering in hospital.

Family is still in shock after what happened.

The sister and father of the woman who was seriously injured curse her luck but also acknowledge she’s lucky to be alive.

The crash happened around 5 a.m. this past Monday.

A speeding pickup truck going the wrong way on 52nd Street N.E. first hit and killed a woman in her 50s walking down the street.

Seconds later, the truck smashed into a Jeep Cherokee, leaving Jonathan and Taylor Ramoutar fighting for their lives.

On Thursday, just two days after the couple’s fourth wedding anniversary, they’re still separated inside Foothills Hospital.

They’ve got a slew of injuries, including dozens of broken bones, internal lacerations and collapsed lungs, but both are expected to recover.

Family and friends are fundraising to help with any expenses—medical or otherwise—that may pop up along what’s sure to be a long road to recovery.

“Every time we get something good—she sat up, got in a wheelchair—her pain is bad,” said Morgan Burdock, sister.

“She has a pain management team that’s struggling to keep her comfortable.”

“It was unbelievable at first. You don’t want to believe they’d be in that predicament,” said Pat Boswall, father.

“It always happens to someone else’s child—not your own."

Charges are still pending against the driver of the truck, and police say it could actually be some time before they’re laid.

A police spokesperson calls it a “dynamic event that officers are taking their time with.”

A GoFundMe has been started for the couple.
