The hamlet of Gem, Alta., located almost two hours east of Calgary, was the snowiest community in southern Alberta on Thursday. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) said the Newell County community – with a population of 29 – saw 35 centimetres of snowfall in the late-season blizzard on Wednesday and Thursday. According to the official weather data, nearby Gleichen saw between 33 and 35 centimetres, while Calgary had between 10 and 26 centimetres. The storm, which began Wednesday evening, resulted in snowfall warnings for Calgary and many other surrounding communities. High winds made conditions worse, piling the fallen snow into drifts between 60 to 70 centimetres deep in some areas. The remaining snowfall reports are as follows:
