Taxi fares dropping at some Calgary companies.

Associated Cab is one of the companies lowering it's fares.

Two companies, Associated Cab and Delta Cab, are lowering their fare rates due to changes to a bylaw that eliminates minimum charges.

The bylaw was changed to allow ride-sharing services like Uber to set up shop in Calgary, though that organization decided not to, saying the changes didn’t go far enough.

Associated Cab’s fares are dropping by 12% effective April 11, 2016, and Delta Cab’s rates will fall by 15% starting April 8, 2016. Checker Cab say it is studying the rates and could make a change in the next few days. The companies say the changes will make them more competitive.

“We feel it's the right thing to do at this time,” said Roger Richard, Associated Cab President. “If one looks at the economic situation, there's no doubt that business is down for everybody and our view is that we can do more for the customers and hopefully get more customers to use taxis instead of using other means of transportation."

The companies also cite lower gas prices and the economic downturn for the decision.
