Snow will likely impact travel just ahead of the long weekend

Snow expected to begin Wednesday, continue Thursday. Jodi Hughes has a look at the five-day forecast from the Sky Watch Weather Centre.

Wednesday will include some melting early in the day before more snow starts to fall later in the evening.

There will be a decent amount of sun in the first half of the day today with a daytime high in Calgary of 2 C, which is around six degrees cooler than average.

A moisture-laden low-pressure system is moving from the Pacific basin into southern British Columbia this morning and will eventually cut into southwestern Alberta later today.

Due to the natural counter-clockwise rotation around a low and the physical barrier of the Rocky Mountains, when these kinds of systems enter a region like southwestern Alberta they can be very difficult to forecast in terms of both precipitation totals and coverage.

As of Wednesday morning, it seems likely that Calgary could see upwards of 10 centimetres of snow before the end of the Thursday morning commute.

There is also a chance that most of the snow will fall between Calgary and areas south (toward the U.S. border).

There is high confidence that portions of the southern foothills and southern regions of the province will record the largest accumulations in this latest snow event and decent model agreement that snow will fall along both Highway 2 and the QEII corridor as far north as Red Deer.

Daytime highs in areas like Lethbridge will sit in the low double-digits on Wednesday, so some of that initial precipitation will fall as rain or a rain/snow mix, which could make road conditions in that area more dangerous once the snow falls on top of these wet surfaces.

Temperatures will sit below freezing in Calgary on Thursday before warming back up to near-seasonal values on Friday, and up to 10 C on Saturday, so any snow that is on the roads should melt quickly as we head into the Easter long weekend.
