Southwest Calgary street reopens following Monday train derailment

Several freight cars ended up in a pond in southwest Calgary on July 13, 2026. Crews are investigating what caused the derailment.

Sheriff King Street in the southwest has reopened following Monday’s train derailment.

The Calgary Police Service (CPS) and Calgary Fire Department (CFD) were called to the 17000 block of Sheriff King Street S.W. at 7:50 a.m. Monday.

“On arrival crews located a stopped train with multiple cars derailed and some in the water way running beside the train tracks,” said Alex Kwan, CFD public information officer, in a statement to CTV News.

Thirteen rail cars containing propane, lumber, plywood and argon landed in a pond.

Officials say there have been no leaks or spills.

The cause of the derailment remains under investigation.
