2 dead, 3 hospitalized in Alberta highway crash

Two Calgary women are dead and three others including a child are in hospital after a two-vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 9 and Highway 564.

Two Calgary women are dead and three other people have been hospitalized following a collision in Rocky View County Sunday morning.

Airdrie Rural RCMP said that around 10:39 a.m., Strathmore and Airdrie RCMP were dispatched to a two-vehicles collision at the intersection of Highways 9 and 564.

Officers discovered a GMC truck pulling a trailer and a Ford Escape with four people inside had collided.

A woman who was a passenger in the Ford Escape was dead on scene. A second woman who was also a passenger in the Escape was transported to hospital, where she died.

RCMP identified those victims as a 63-year-old and 33-year-old, both from Calgary.

The other occupants of the vehicle, a man and a child were seriously injured in the crash.

The child was transported by STARS air ambulance to the Alberta Children’s Hospital in critical condition, while the man, in critical condition, was taken to a Calgary hospital by ambulance.

The driver of the pickup truck was also transported to hospital in serious condition.

Airdrie Rural RCMP said traffic is being diverted around the collision, forcing the temporary closure of Highway 9 between Township Road 252 and 260.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash.
