Wednesday will mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation across Canada, and the University of Lethbridge is hosting a series of events leading up to it. The events began Monday with a sweet-grass-on-coals ceremony. Attendees also took part in ceremonial rock and face painting and also heard stories from Indigenous elders. Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike were welcome on Monday and will continue to be welcome at events through the week. Iniskim Indigenous Relations staff at the university believe it’s important for all Canadians to take part in the events no matter their background. “I believe it sets a great example for students who are here—to show that we have to be committed, (and) that we are committed, to advancing the understanding around Truth and Reconciliation (and) the legacy that was left behind,” said Annette Fox-BruisedHead, ULethbridge Indigenous Relations vice-provost. A full schedule of this week’s events is available on the university’s website.
